Ross qualified as a lawyer in 1976. After working in a law firm in Wellington he
moved to Mount Maunganui in 1981, became a partner of a mid-sized law firm in
1984, then set up Ross Abernethy Law Office in 1995. Since then, the firm has
grown to the now Abernethy Broatch McFetridge.
Ross has dealt with most aspects of law other than
criminal defence. He was a specialist in developing Retirement Villages and has
an extensive knowledge of company and commercial law. He and his legal
executive Angela Morse developed a huge client base looking after clients house
sales and purchases, establishing and maintaining trusts, wills, estates,
Enduring Powers of Attorney, Contracting Out Agreements, and separations.
Ross has been a director of companies, including a
listed company, a trustee on many charitable organisations, both national and
international, and even spent time in Mongolia assisting in the development of
business opportunities and financing. He has had a long relationship with
Driving Creek Railway in the Coromandel on the charitable Trust and its
operating company, and has been chairman of the company for a number of years.
He also is occasionally called upon to assist in reviews of other lawyers by the
NZ Law Society.
Notwithstanding unfair allegations of being a
workaholic Ross has plenty of activities outside the office, whether it be a
bass guitarist, a sailor, ex marathon runner and keen walker, and most
importantly a motorcyclist. He is married with 4 children and 5 grandchildren.
